SUMMARY:San Benito Open Studios Art Tour
DESCRIPTION:Every spring\, artists in San Benito County open their studios to the public enabling guests to learn all about the artistic process. The towns of Hollister\, San Juan Bautista\, and Aromas provide a beautiful country backdrop for an afternoon art tour. A visit to Mosshollow Hill gives guests an opportunity to learn all about the fiber art process with Susan as well as meet other local artists hosted at The Hill. \nAndrea McCann will be demonstrating her fiber art from her alpaca Fozzie as well as mixed-media creations including print-making and carved emu eggs from her beautiful flock. \nIn addition\, members from 2 local guilds\, Anne’s Web Spinners and The Carmel Crafts Guild\, will be set up around the gardens prepping fiber\, spinning\, weaving\, knitting\, and crocheting all weekend. \nThis year\, Aromas is hosting on a separate weekend from San Juan Bautista and Hollister so visitors can spend more time listening\, learning\, and\, at Mosshollow Hill\, doing as we will encourage visitors to try some of these fiber arts and join the local guilds. \nWe look forward to seeing you in our gardens and kitchen where Susan will be felting and dyeing fiber. Although the studio is upstairs\, it will not be open to the public due to the difficulty many visitors have with navigating stairs. We will work with our visitors to ensure accessibility. \nMosshollow Hill will be open from 11-4 both days\, so if you visit and want to come back to spend more time\, we welcome you! \nNo pets please as we want to maintain the well-being of our chickens\, sheep\, goats\, cats\, and dog. Thank you for understanding.

SUMMARY:Transition Aromas Harvest Fair
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! Transition Aromas is planning to host their annual Harvest Fair in our small park this fall. We haven’t had our annual event since 2019\, and I miss it so much. \nWe’re hoping (pending COVID-related safety concerns) to hold this charming town event in order to educate the public on all things farming. This year’s focus is on animals in addition to produce\, so families can come learn about flocks\, fiber\, eggs\, flowers\, pollinators\, and food. \nWhile we still plan on having various stations and activities\, we will be following all safety protocols. Stay tuned for updates as they get approval. \nI plan on having an egg display with information and images of the various breeds of hens we have and what color eggs they lay. \n \nI will also have a wool display from our own ladies. \n \nPeople can see baskets of fleece from unwashed to fully processed\, dyed\, and carded as well as see images of the sheep at different times of the year. \n \nIt’s all about educating people about where their food and resources originate in order to help build empathy and support for the rural communities in the area. \nI look forward to gathering again in our park to celebrate the season.

SUMMARY:Wet-Felting Project Bag Workshop at Slow Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to make your own fabric? Are you curious about the felting process? If so\, join me on a wet-felting exploration at Slow Fiber where students will create a hand-made project bag using the resist method. You will learn to incorporate textures and colors from yarn\, bits of silk and fabric remnants into a wet-felted wool base. No knitting or crocheting necessary. \nStudents may choose from between 3 different color kits (included in cost) which will include enough wool and fibers to create a medium-sized project bag with a flap. \nThis 3.5 hour adventure requires patience\, whole-body physicality\, and as much creativity and enthusiasm as you want to bring to the project. Make sure to wear comfortable clothes and footwear as you’ll be alternating between standing and sitting. \nYou will bring: \n2 bath-sized towels \n-1 hand towel \n-1 sponge \n-1 disposable plastic water bottle with a lid (used for sprinkling water) \n-notebook/journal and pen/pencil for taking notes \n-scissors \n-9-12 inch kitchen bowl (for hot water) \nWe will break for 30 minutes for lunch. There are plenty of places to eat in the neighborhood or you can pack a lunch. \nEverything else will be provided to borrow during the class. I look forward to seeing what everyone creates!

SUMMARY:Lambtown-A Virtual Celebration of Sheep\, Lamb\, and Wool!
DESCRIPTION:In February\, I decided to apply to Lambtown after speaking to vendors at Stitches West encouraging me to do so. I got in! \nHappy Dance! \nHowever\, then life threw us all a challenge. \nCovid-19 has changed the way events are being held this year\, but it’s certainly not stopping events from bringing communities together in an online setting. \nLambtown is a weekend celebration in October that celebrates all things sheep\, wool\, and lamb. There is the largest sheep to shawl competition in the country\, fleece judging and auction\, livestock sales\, and a chance to get your hands on all the fiber-loveliness. \n \nNow\, it’s true you won’t be able to touch the fiber (which I admit is the best part)\, but there will be online workshops\, tutorials\, interviews\, and so much more. \nYou’ll get to browse the vendor’s online shops\, and hopefully make some one-of-a-kind purchases. \n  \n  \n  \nI’ll be interviewed about my process\, and I’ll be hosting virtual tours of our small farm. \nYou’ll get to meet the wooly-ladies themselves\, and I’ll show you what goes on in my studio. \nI hope you tune in and help make Lambtown’s first virtual event a success. Artists and farmers need your support more than ever\, so hopefully you’ll get a chance to meet some new friends and form life-long bonds with like-minded people. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

This year\, we are going to host a virtual tour\, so you’ll get a chance to see everyone’s studio over a two-week time period. \nA virtual visit to Mosshollow Hill gives guests an opportunity to learn all about the felting process with Susan as well as to meet the real stars-the wooly bears themselves! \n \nGo to the San Benito Arts Council website to get more information. You’ll have two weeks to visit as many studios as you can or hunker down at a few studios and spend more time getting to know how artists bring their visions to life. \nIn Susan’s fiber studio\, you’ll see how she blends natural fibers with up-cycled materials for environmentally-friendly wearable art and one-of-a-kind felted treasures. She has recently begun spinning and dyeing fiber\, so you’ll get a comprehensive education on how she takes her Wensleydale/Romney sheeps’ raw fleeces and transforms them into art. \n   \nYou’ll also get a chance to purchase fiber\, kits\, supplies\, and one-of-a-kind art. You won’t want to miss this event. \nJoin this family-friendly virtual celebration at Mosshollow Hill!

SUMMARY:Felting Texture Workshop!
DESCRIPTION:[wysija_form id=”1″] \nEver look at a piece of handmade felt and marvel at the textures? Would you like to visit my studio and get your hands on some lovely wool? If so\, please sign up for my texture workshop where you will spend the day playing with fiber\, meeting the Mosshollow Hill critters\, and learning new skills. \nThe first workshop is Tuesday\, November 26 from 10-4\, and the second workshop is Sunday\, January 19th from 10-4. The cost of each workshop is $250 with a $50 deposit. A layaway plan is available upon request. If you’re interested in taking both workshops\, you will get a discounted price and learn some more advanced textural techniques. \nFind inspiration in the textures around you…\n \nWhat is this “felting” of which you speak?\nYou will get to experiment with three different kinds of felting techniques: nuno-felting\, surface design\, and resist. This piece of felt I made for a Weirwood cosplay shows all three techniques in one piece. \n \nNuno-felt is laminated felting where you work wool into an open-weave fabric such as silk chiffon\, cheesecloth\, mesh\, tulle\, etc. If you can breathe through the fabric\, you can felt it. \n-The top image shows wool and angora rabbit fur felted onto silk chiffon. Look at the top edges of the fabric\, and you can see the lovely crinkle where the silk puckered as the wool shrunk. \nSurface design is often combined with nuno-felt\, but if you have an old wool sweater\, you can design directly on that. With surface design\, you can play with yarns\, scraps of fabric\, fibers\, etc. Get creative! \n-The top image shows strips of polyester fibers and yarns felted onto the wool. \nResist felting is when you enclose a non-porous material in wool and then remove it in order to create pockets\, boots\, mittens\, hats\, bags\, or texture. Felters use a variety of materials ranging from marbles (shown above)\, plastic tarp\, beans\, etc. \n-The top image shows where the marbles had been removed after having been covered and felted to the base wool layers. You cut out the marbles\, remove them\, and then you’ll have a lovely texture that\, when dry\, can be beaded or embellished in a variety of ways. \n \nYou can bring materials from home (the more repurposed the better) and mix them with my supplies to create 3 samples of felted texture you can display in your home or incorporate into a garment. Each sample will be approximately 6″-12″\, small enough to complete in the time frame and large enough to learn the technique. \nYou will receive thin tree branches upon which you will hang your textured art if you so choose. \nCome prepared to get soapy and wet as well as work your muscles because felting is labor intensive! \n\nThe studio awaits you and your creativity. If being creative frightens you\, or you have no idea of what to make\, fear not. Once you get your hands on the raw materials\, your hands will know what to do. I’ll be your guide\, and I look forward to helping you explore fiber art. \n \nDetails\nWhat to bring: \n\n2-3 large towels\n1 hand towel\nwear clothes that can get wet and soapy\nwear comfortable shoes\nany yarns\, fibers\, materials\, remnants you have stored away and want to use or repurpose\nlunch\n\nWhat I’ll provide: \n\nsnacks (let me know of any food allergies and dietary restrictions)\ndrinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)\nwool\nsilks/cheesecloth/tulle or other nuno-felt base fabrics\nembellishments (silk noil\, yarns\, fabric scraps\, etc)\nfelting materials (mats\, rollers\, plastic tarps/sheets\, and a variety of resist tools\n1 handmade bar of vegan soap from House of Wormwood (made at Mosshollow Hill) that you can use during the class and take home with you\ninspiration (if looking through my books\, materials\, and felted examples isn’t enough\, wandering around the farm\, touching trees and plants\, and meeting the sheep\, goats\, and chickens just might do the trick)\n\nMobility concerns: \nMy studio is on the 2nd floor of our house\, so if mobility is a concern for you\, we can arrange to have the workshop downstairs and/or outside if needed. \nKeep in mind that felting is physically demanding and felters use their upper body strength as well as their leg muscles in order to create quality pieces of felt. If you are dealing with back\, shoulder\, or wrist pain\, please contact me for more information. I want to ensure a positive experience for everyone. \nStretching during felting is IMPERATIVE. Trust me. I pulled a gluteal muscle the first time I felted because I didn’t stretch or watch my body for signs of wear. \nAllergen alert: \nWe have cats and a dog inside our home\, so if you are prone to allergies\, be forewarned. Our dog has never been inside the studio\, but the cats have. \nCapacity: \nI would like to limit the class to 5-6 people\, but I can make exceptions if requested. \nExperience level/age requirements: \nBeginners welcome! You don’t need to have any previous experience with felting. I ask attendees be at least 11 years old. This would be a wonderful experience for a group of friends\, a shower gift\, a holiday gift\, a date\, or a chance to meet like-minded people. \nLayaway Plan: \nIf the workshop is cost prohibitive for you\, please contact me about a payment plan. I understand and am willing to work with you so please let me know. \nFeel free to contact me at hello@mosshollowhill.com if you have any questions or concerns.
